Importance of Dust Control/Road Stabilization with Hygroscopic Liquids

  • When dust is evident roads are losing their fines into the atmosphere.  This means that the load bearing aggregate on the road will be lessened and that gravel replacement will be needed.  With this comes additional grading costs in addition to the costs of aggregate replacement itself. 

  • The loss of fines in aggregates can contribute to premature and rapidly developing potholes with concerns for safety and comfortable travel on gravel roads.  This also impacts maintenance and repairs on vehicles travelling on these roads.  

  • Dust from untreated roads can create hazardous visibility conditions, especially on high traffic and high speed gravel roads. 

  • Airborne dust particles can represent health issues to humans and can also affect the normal growth of nearby vegetation.

Features of Trillium Products - DM35 and Dustmaster20

Trillium's DM35 and DM20 contain significant amounts of calcium chloride and Magnesium Chloride (MgCl2). These are the key hygroscopic components that these liquids need to absorb and hold moisture, thereby binding particles of the aggregate together which keep them on the road and not in the air. 

DM35 is the premium concentrated solution which can be compared "hygroscopically" to a 35% pure calcium chloride solution.  It can be applied liter to liter at the same rate as a pure 35% calcium solution with comparable effectiveness. 

Dustmaster20 is a natural calcium/magnesium and sodium solution.  The effective "hygroscopic" qualities (calcium and magnesium chlorides) of Dustmaster20 can be compared to a 20% pure calcium chloride solution. Accordingly it is effective as a dust control liquid when applied at proper rates and under the proper conditions.

The choice of DM35 or Dustmaster20 often boils down to an analysis of the overall cost of the respective products, traffic volumes, road condition, environmental conditions and the objectives of the treatment.  These details can be reviewed with Trillium staff and knowledgeable distributors without obligation at your request. 

DM35 satisfies the requirements of Ontario's OPSS 2501 (Calcium Chloride) for Dust Control and has also received Quebec's BNQ Certificate of Conformity for dust control applications in that province.  DM35 passes the rainbow trout toxicity test common for many environmentally conscious agencies for product and use approval. 

Stabilization and Full Depth Reclamation

The significant hygroscopic qualities of DM35 in particular keep particles together and compacted that would otherwise fragment and disperse quite easily.  Accordingly, while reducing dust, DM35 also stabilizes the road.  This feature has proven effective when performing FDR (Full Depth Reclamation) when rebuilding deteriorated asphalt roads.  Treatments with these hygroscopic liquids allow better material compaction.  This results in a firmer base, lowers material costs and largely eliminates the costs of disposal for old asphalt which is now recoverable. 

The use of DM35 in conjunction with any FDR program can be reviewed with contractors and /or engineers for suitability and application rates. 

Road Design, Preparation and Application Rates

DM35, Dustmaster20 or any other hygroscopic solutions are not a replacement for regular road maintenance or proper road design.  However, in conjunction with standard design and a regular maintenance program DM35 and /or DM20 will help keep your roads in shape and will help keep total road management costs as low as possible. 

SprayerGravel roads require a 4% crossfall from the crown and should have no berms along the sides or shoulders to allow proper road drainage.  Grading should be performed when some moisture is evident in the road surface.  Applications should not be made when heavy rainfalls are occurring or expected that might supersaturate the road. 

Gravel Specifications should be observed - Granular "S" with 8 - 10% minimum fines - Granular "A" with 8% fines - 5/8 or 3/4 gravel.  Recommended Sieve tests would have acceptable rating of 12 to 17% through #4 Mesh and 8 to 17% through a Number #200 Mesh depending on type of gravel.  Local Road engineers are in best position to advise on gravel specifications. 

The approximate application rate for DM35 of 1840 liters per lane/km (3,680 liters per km on standard two lane gravel road (8-9 meter width)).  This rate can vary significantly depending on road conditions (aggregate composition, base, residual moisture), weather conditions, traffic activity and desired results. 

The application rates for Dustmaster20 are approximately double those of DM35 due to its proportionately lower concentrations of its hygroscopic components. 

Many users report a re-appearance of the hygroscopic chloride following spring thaw from residual that is being re-activated naturally.
